Foods from across a variety of African countries, are finally getting the accolade and exposure they deserve in the UK and of late, the capital has seen a sudden rise in the popularity of African Supperclubs and pop-ups…enabling Londoners to try delicious and diverse flavours from across the continent. On Saturday 5th August, from 6.30pm – 9.30pm, guests will be able to sample the delights of authentic Sierra Leonean cuisine, at My African Hob’s inaugural Supperclub in Hammersmith, West London. We’ve been told guests can expect “a warm welcome, an evening of African celebration, deliciously home-cooked food and full flavour from Sierra Leone.” Upon arrival welcome drinks made from traditional West African ingredients like a warming Ginger Beer and lime drink; or a Wonjo (Hibiscus flower/sorrel) cocktail, will be served and a three course menu will include a choice of: Starters – Banana akara (Ve) or Sierra Leone style banana fritters served with homemade pepper sauce; Mains – Skewered roast beef kebab with spicy Couscous (beef cubes marinated in peanut sauce, grilled with onions and sweet peppers) or Black eyed beans stew with roasted sweet potatoes (Ve) and Pear Tart (V) with vanilla ice cream, for dessert. It’s time for baked beans to take centre stage, as a Heinz Beanz café will be popping up in Selfridges Food Hall from March 27 to April 23, to celebrate 50 years since the slogan ‘Beanz Meanz Heinz’ has bean around! Habouring memories of student days gone by, the Beanz Meanz Heinz Cafe will serve – beans with crispy bacon, beans with ham hock and beans with scrambled egg, all of which come with the option of adding extra cheese. Great news for cheese lovers…as London is to get a bar dedicated to cheese and ‘the best grilled cheese sandwiches in London’, as billed by Time Out Magazine. After three years of selling their signature cheese toasties from a vintage yellow converted ice-cream van named ‘Alfie’, The Cheese Truck is set to open its takeaway hatch and doors, to its first permanent restaurant, The Cheese Bar, in Camden Stables Market, from Thursday 2nd March. According to Stylist Magazine, “the cheese-celebrating menu will include ‘Alfie’ classics like; the Cropwell Bishop Stilton, bacon and pear chutney sandwich and exciting new additions such as Queso Fundido – a Mexican version of fondue. Breakfast Poutine is a spin on the classic French-Canadian dish, with bacon gravy, candied pancetta and Gringa Dairy cheese curds topped off with a fried egg. You can even indulge in cheese for dessert with a dark chocolate ice cream sundae made with honey and Beeleigh Blue – a creamy ewe’s milk cheese from South Devon.” To celebrate the opening of their Takeaway Hatch they’re having a “sandwich amnesty” on Thursday 2nd March, from 12pm – 3pm and you’ll be able to swap any unopened shop bought sandwich for one of their classic grilled cheese sandwiches absolutely FREE! (The donated sandwiches will be handed out to charity SHP – Single Homeless Project at the end of the day). Bill’s Restaurant has teamed up with Marmite and from the 9th – 31st January, branches across the UK will be serving the secret menu, to those in the know, who use the phrase ‘Spread the Love’. Customers can tuck into The Marmite Rarebit: a combination of Marmite, crème fraiche, egg, English mustard and mature cheddar served on a toasted bloomer with two poached eggs and fresh parsley; which can be washed down with the Marmite Mary cocktail – made with Chivas Regal 12 year-old, tomato juice, cream, lemon and a Marmite reduction. High raise dining will be taken to new levels…literally; as ‘London in the Sky’ returns in July next year (19th – 30th July 2017), with what is promised to be their “best ever chef line-up” offering guests an unforgettable Michelin-starred dining experience, over the London sky-line. The full restaurant line-up, including their menus, will be announced in the last week of January 2017. A specially designed “sky table” platform will sit 22 belted in diners, with a guest chef, sommelier and waiting team serving from the centre of the table. Upon arrival guests will be served a glass of champagne (to possibly help calm the nerves) and taken through the registration process, before being suspended 100 feet in the air. Top chefs from some of London’s finest restaurants, such as Michael Reid (M Restaurants), Jeremy Page (L’Atelier de Joël Robuchon) and Calum Franklin (Holborn Dining Room) to name a few, will transfer their menus and dining experiences to this unique event. Guests have the option of breakfast, lunch or dinner (with either an early sitting or sunset sitting) and drink flights are also available in the afternoon and evening.
